Are you an entrepreneur? Be Patient

Do not expand to quickly, you may implode. I was contacted by a representative of a local telecommunications service  provider. He tried to convince me to advertise in  the local telephone directory. That way ,he said, I would attract new prospects. At the time I was discussing this proposition with a brilliant business professional. She asked me what I would do with all those incoming calls . She said that I may be overwhelmed and I agreed. The telephone directory also has an online version, the result is double exposure. I carefully considered the advice and I told the representative that I may contact him in the next 5 years.

I have been binge watching comedy series from the 80’s and 90’s. While watching an episode of “Sister,Sister” Lisa started a business, she made dresses and offered them for sale. Her first customer bought a dress and Lisa felt invincible. She started planning to attract new customers. She called the media houses and asked for quotations to place advertisements. She was advised by Ray that she should take it slowly and not expand too quickly. Lisa placed the advertisement and the same client came knocking on her door.Ray answered the door and gave the first customer a full cash refund and accepted the dress that she wanted to return. He hid the dress that was returned in order to protect Lisa’s feelings. Lisa was upset when she discovered the truth but she was determined to bring her dream to pass. She realised that she needed to conduct the business on a small scale then ,eventually she would expand.

I recalled a conversation with one of my clients , he indicated that equipment should not be purchased unless a contract was secured. He said that a business must be gradually expanded , creep then walk.

I want to appeal to you ,although you may be ambitious, life will knock your socks off. Be patient, trust the process. Do not take loans to acquire equipment if it seems that work is not forthcoming. The equipment has a minimum of 6 months warranty. In the event that you do not get any clients, you will not have cause to use the equipment and detect any flaws. The warranty may expire before you get a client. You will then have to pay to repair or replace the equipment. Should you decide to sell the equipment, you will lose money because of depreciation.

Remember success is 1% inspiration and 99% persistence , so please learn as much as you can, acquire contracts then expand,in that order.

Why You MUST get a Utility Bill in Your Name!

What is a utility bill?

A utility bill is a detailed invoice from a service provider for your consumption of utilities such as electricity, internet, water. Some companies send you the utility bills monthly or every 2 months, especially for us in Trinidad and Tobago for electricity.

Why are utility bills important for entrepreneurs?

As a business owner, you will be asked to present a utility bill as your proof of address in order to conduct the following transactions:

1.Open a Business Bank Account (as well as personal bank account);

2.Get a Business Loan;

3.Get a credit card;

4.Purchasing a car

5.To get a mortgage to buy land.

Subscribe to my Youtube channel.

What is Proof of address?

This is verification of your residential address. Financial institutions and listed businesses in Trinidad must obtain a utility bill from all customers. This is stated in law , particularly at Regulation Proof of Address 15 (1) (b) “permanent address and proof thereof” Financial Obligations Regulations. There is a body of laws and regulations that aims to fight anti-money laundering and the countering the financing of terrorism.

What happens if utility bill is not in your name?

Authorization Letters

If the bill is not in your name, you must present a letter of authorization from the person whose name appears on the bill as well as a copy of the persons National ID card. The signature on the letter must match the signature on the person’s ID card.

Parents/Family

Usually the utility bill is in the name of a parent and you can get a letter of authorization from your parent.

Tenants

There are other cases where, you are renting, and your landlord has to provide you with the authorization letter and copy of ID.

Deceased Persons

In the event that the person whose name is on the utility bill is deceased, this bill will not be accepted by financial institutions. You will be asked to return to the Service Provider and follow their internal process to get the name changed.

Best Practice?

It would be wise to get a utility bill in your name; it can be as easy as taking out the internet in your name in the instance of persons living with their friends.

You have to follow through : To leave your mark on the world

Finish what you start. Everyone must learn this lesson. There is a certain pleasure to be derived from completing that which you start. Be it a relationship, a project or a degree, finish it. Quitting is easy, Anyone can quit. It takes a certain grade of a person to continue. Life can be challenging. But do not give up. Take some time off for yourself. Take a break, but do not give up. Keep trying. Many people are critical of the new business ideas that I execute. I then ask them to show me what they have produced. Absolutely nothing. They have done nothing. Yet they criticize your efforts. Ignore them, continue trying. I have been mentoring a young man who is also an entrepreneur. He sees me twice a week. He tells me his ideas then by the following day he is executing it. He returns to tell me the progress. Some days he is happy with progress,  other days he is frustrated. But he never gives up. He has a bright future ahead of him. I enjoy sharing ideas with him, we discuss them and then follow through. It only works, if you work it. Follow through.

Go Forth and Meet your Destiny

You have to find your success. What are you passionate about ? Structure your passion with your profession. You will never work another day in your life. Money will follow. It may be hard in the early stages, but despise not the day of small beginnings. Keep your head up. The time has expired for waiting for someone else to make your dreams come true. This is your life. All failures and success in your life thus far are attributable solely to you. Find out what your strengths are. Work on your weaknesses. Become the best version of you possible. Things will fall in place. If you are single, at this time, enjoy it. Use the time to develop your skills. Get a hobby, work on a project, keep your hands busy. Ten years from now, you will laugh at the things that you endured.

Always remember that there is a younger person looking at you. You may be a role model for someone. It may  be your son, or sister or a neighbor. There will also be negative people awaiting your demise. Be determined to prove them wrong. Hold the vision, go forth and meet your destiny.

What does the way you walk say about you?

I have always been teased about the way I walk. I walk quickly, I pass people by on the sidewalks as though a dog I chasing me. I am oftentimes told that I would get a speeding ticket. I simply laugh at these jokes. In response, I say that I am “on a mission”. I could be on my way to class, on my way to the office or about to meet a friend, I walk with purpose.
Increasing your walking pace by 25% was one of the confidence building exercises in the Magic of Thinking Big . The author told of the games his mother played that consisted of watching passersby and observing their walking habits. His mother advised him that there was much to learn from observing the walking habits of people. The author said that psychologists link poor posture and sluggish walking to low self confidence. Psychologists also say that our attitudes can be changed by improving our posture and by increasing our speed of movement.

The author described 3 different groups of people based on their walking patterns. The first group are the “beaten people”, they “shuffle and stumble along through their life”. The second group of people are average and so is their walk, average. The last group of people exude “superconfidence” in the words of the author. These people walk faster than average, there is a sprint in the way they walk. Their walk tells the world “ I’ve got someplace important to go, something important to do”. Moreover, it tells the onlooker that the walker will succeed at anything he is about to do. The author advised that we should “throw our shoulders back, lift up our head and walk a little faster and feel confidence grow.
