Should I get a Credit Card?: Trinidad Online Entrepreneur

She was advised that her position was made redundant and that her services were no longer required. She spent 12 years at the bank. She refused to accept the separation package and decided to ask for a transfer to another location or division of the bank. She was approaching 51 years and she considered herself to be a difficult hire. She was aware that the job market was tough and since she did not further her education post secondary school, her chances were limited.

I asked her why did her position suddenly become redundant. She told me that she refused to offer customers credit cards and loan facilities. She said that she lamented the indebtedness of the customers in the queue to pay off their credit cards. It was a refreshing view, that a bank employee did not believe in taking credit cards and loan facilities when it was not needed.

It is loan sale time. As the Christmas season approaches, there are jingles on all radio stations with loan promotions. I visited the bank to make my loan application. The loans officer offered me a credit card and $20,000 extra. I told her that I had no use for $20,000 cash currently. This also meant a longer period to repay the loan. I asked her whether the additional $20,000 could be placed in a mutual fund. That way, a lower interest rate would be offered. Also, the bank will hold the $20,000 as collateral. I agreed to this proposition.

A word to the wise, you may be offered a credit card or additional money by your friendly, neighborhood banker. But remember that if you do not need it, do not take it. The banks thrive on excessive interest rates and credit card late fees. If you do not need it, do not take it.

Stranger Danger :Do parents still warn kids to stay away from strangers?

“Stranger Danger,Stranger Danger” I repeated to my 5 year old neighbor. She had no idea what I was talking about . Her mother told her that she was going to the shop,3 hours passed she the little kid was becoming worried. She asked me if I was going to the shop , if yes , she wanted me to look for her mother .

The child saw a man passing and ran to her gate , she said “Excuse me,excuse me,are you going to the shop ? If you see my mommy, tell her to come home please!!” I ran out of my house to warn her about the dangers of doing this . When I saw her she was in a vest and she was not wearing her shorts . I became enraged because I could foresee the dangers in calling out to stranger . At the time she was being supervised by her 17 year old sister. I warned her sister that this was incredibly dangerous.

Parents , please remember to warn your kids about the current occurrences of missing children . There must be a way for us to have these conversations with kids . Long gone are the days of avoiding difficult discussions with children.

How to deal with angry customers who insult you? A message to all those employed in the service industry and hospitality industry

I am well on my way to reading one book every week  pursuant to my new year’s resolution. This week, I am exploring “The magic of Thinking Big by David Schwartz. In one chapter he narrates a  story of an irate guest at a hotel who sent a telegram to reserve a room for a single occupant but who came to the hotel clerk requesting  hotel room with double occupancy. The customer insulted the clerk threatening to have him fired and questioned his intelligence. The young clerk apologized but declared that he was merely following instructions.

The author was next in line to deal with the clerk but was pleasantly surprised when the clerk greeted him warmly. The author told the clerk that he admired the way that he dealt with the previous customer. The clerk stated that he refused to be infuriated by a customer like that, he empathised with the man and supposed that he was having marital problems and that the man used him as a scapegoat to feel superior. The clerk added that “…underneath he is  probably a nice guy, most folks are…”

The author then suggested that we remember this statement the next time someone “declares war on us. He said the best way to deal with situations like this is to let the other person say their piece, then forget about it”.

We have nothing to lose by following this approach. Instead of responding to their insults , especially for those of us who work in the service industry, it is wise to hold our tongue. There is nothing to gain by charging with bitter words. The other person may in fact be experiencing some trying times and may simply want attention. Although you may find that your minimum wage does not pay you enough to take insults, I am sure by the following week that you will forget the exchange of words.
