Reminder: Annual Returns are due

Do not forget to remember to file your annual returns. I understand that running your company is a huge responsibility. You have deadlines, pressing matters, impatient clients. Your annual returns are due on the anniversary of incorporating the company. You will see the date of incorporation on the Certificate of Incorporation.

There is a time period of 30 days after the anniversary date also called a “grace period”. After this 30 day period elapses, a penalty of $300.00 per month will be incurred. This debt must be satisfied in full before any further Annual Returns can be filed.

The Ministry of Legal Affairs offers a service in Trinidad and Tobago, whereby a director and or corporate secretary will receive an email or SMS text message indicating that the Annual Returns are now due.

Kindly peruse the website of the Ministry of Legal Affairs in Trinidad and Tobago and look for the section with “SMS and Email Sign Up“.

Business Idea No. 1: Coconut Water Business

Do you like coconut water? In the Caribbean islands, coconut water is a refreshing , healthy drink that can be purchased from vendors. These vendors usually sell from trucks, parked near public recreational spots. Apart from this, coconut water can be purchased in a store in a bottle. Some vendors have franchises and sell at different locations, they even operate on a shift system. The coconuts are purchased wholesale or are picked from coconut fields owned by the vendors.

I heard a rumor that some person raid fields that do not belong to them and then sell the coconuts wholesale. There is a jelly inside of the coconuts, that many people enjoy. Coconut water has great health benefits and so , many persons consume it for this reason.

This is a great idea if you have a connection to purchase the coconuts.

Are there business classes at your school or university?

As I pen this note to my 2 faithful readers,I am watching an episode of “Saved by the Bell”. The students were in class and all had presentations to make to explore a real business that they will start.

After each presentation, the teacher asked if the student if the really believed in the product? When the response was positive , the teacher gave each student an envelope with $100 USD as seed money. He told them to plant that seed and make it grow. He reminded the students to remain motivated.

The next order of business was to get a name for it ,followed by appointment of Presidents. Initially the friends ,the stars of the show ,decided to make “friendship bracelets “. The students believed that their ideas were worth millions. After one week, the students had to explain the progress of their respective businesses.the students reported on net profits and marketing strategies.

I was amazed that such a course existed and the time frame was in the 90’s. This will make a great change to our economy in Trinidad. Students will become empowered, and after graduating they can pursue their business full time . There many degree holders who are unemployed because they lack soft skills , or income generating skills.

Take the little you have and make it work

Start where you are with what you have. Despise not the day of small beginnings. Use the little salary that you currently have to fund your dream.Dreams are expensive. Every month put aside cash to invest in your business.
Learn to cut costs, such as rent ,cell phone bills. Perform a monthly audit to see where your money goes. Then look at ways to spend less. Once the item is in good working condition do not afraid to buy it used. Try not to make excuses as to why you are not living your dreams. You cannot learn business by reading books or watching videos . You must actually start the business. Promote your business and reinvest profits in your own business.

You have to follow through : To leave your mark on the world

Finish what you start. Everyone must learn this lesson. There is a certain pleasure to be derived from completing that which you start. Be it a relationship, a project or a degree, finish it. Quitting is easy, Anyone can quit. It takes a certain grade of a person to continue. Life can be challenging. But do not give up. Take some time off for yourself. Take a break, but do not give up. Keep trying. Many people are critical of the new business ideas that I execute. I then ask them to show me what they have produced. Absolutely nothing. They have done nothing. Yet they criticize your efforts. Ignore them, continue trying. I have been mentoring a young man who is also an entrepreneur. He sees me twice a week. He tells me his ideas then by the following day he is executing it. He returns to tell me the progress. Some days he is happy with progress,  other days he is frustrated. But he never gives up. He has a bright future ahead of him. I enjoy sharing ideas with him, we discuss them and then follow through. It only works, if you work it. Follow through.

Go Forth and Meet your Destiny

You have to find your success. What are you passionate about ? Structure your passion with your profession. You will never work another day in your life. Money will follow. It may be hard in the early stages, but despise not the day of small beginnings. Keep your head up. The time has expired for waiting for someone else to make your dreams come true. This is your life. All failures and success in your life thus far are attributable solely to you. Find out what your strengths are. Work on your weaknesses. Become the best version of you possible. Things will fall in place. If you are single, at this time, enjoy it. Use the time to develop your skills. Get a hobby, work on a project, keep your hands busy. Ten years from now, you will laugh at the things that you endured.

Always remember that there is a younger person looking at you. You may be a role model for someone. It may  be your son, or sister or a neighbor. There will also be negative people awaiting your demise. Be determined to prove them wrong. Hold the vision, go forth and meet your destiny.

Do not let the water get inside the boat : if it does, keep your nose above the water

I listened as she explained her situation. I was sympathetic, but I told her that we were in the same boat. She was underemployed and she opined that the work felt degrading.

She knew that she could do better. Years of sacrifice and effort resulted in debt for tuition and living expenses. I told her to keep her head up. There was no shame in serving. While we are young,we ought to work to learn not earn.

We are not entitled to a dream job after graduation, we have to earn our stripes. I commended her on her successful interviews, and the subsequent employment with the company.

I advised her to do extra things with her time ,that could make extra money. Although her salary is equivalent to an entry level position ,she has to work her way up. The experience that she gains will serve her well in the future.

For those students who are graduating this year, welcome to the rat race. You will be disappointed by what the world of work has to offer to you. Be humble. You have to work to earn your dream job .
